I saw a DIY store (Menards) the use of brick retaining wall blocks to keep exposure to a metal ring in the store. I think it means that you can use.
I think what they said that stones, when it has water in bags and can explode if heated to boiling. Bricks are not likely to have pockets of water. However, the rule can break bricks with extreme heat, but heat will probably reach a fire, it should be no problem.
If you want to be sure, there are special stones known as refractory bricks, was recovered, and specifically for use with fire. They are the building blocks used in your home in your chimney. Use it to layer in direct contact with fire in the stove.
